Fewer than 5% of sacral fractures occur as isolated injuries. Sacral fractures occur in approximately 30% of pelvic ring fractures and these are commonly associated with lumbosacral dislocation with facet injury.

Isolated sacral fractures occur more commonly with simple falls. Higher impact mechanisms such as motor vehicle collisions have other injuries associated with sacral fractures.
