Spine Case 4 Background

Coccyx fracture

Background

The term coccyx is derived from the Greek word kokkoux for cuckoo, as the coccyx resembles the shape of a cuckoo's beak. It is formed from four rudimentary vertebrae. Coccydynia (or coccygodynia) accounts for less than 1% of back pain conditions. It is five times more common in women because the broader female pelvis leaves the coccyx more exposed and prominent.
