Spine Case 6 Background

Transverse Process Fracture

Background

Transverse process fractures, along with fractures of the spinous processes and pars interarticularis, are considered minor fractures -they do not typically result in neurologic compromise and are considered mechanically stable.

There are typically large forces associated with these fractures. There is a significant association between transverse process fractures and intraabdominal injury, so these fractures should be regarded as possible markers for abdominal organ injuries, even though the spine is stable.
