A nightstick fracture is an isolated fracture of the ulnar shaft. It is typically caused by a direct blow to the forearm. This fracture is named because many are sustained trying to defend oneself from being struck with an object (such as a nightstick or bat) by reflexively blocking the blow with the forearm.
