Hand Case 5 Background
Bennett's Fracture
Background
In 1882, Edward Hallaran Bennett described this fracture of the base of the first metacarpal, an intra-articular fracture with a dislocation or subluxation. The portion of the metacarpal base where the volar oblique ligament inserts remains in its anatomic position while the remainder subluxes dorsally and radially due to the pull of the abductor pollicis longus (APL). Because the thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint is critical for pinch and opposition, this injury may severely affect function.
