X-rays show symmetric sacroileitis early in the disease. Squaring of the vertebral bodies is characteristic, and calcifications of the discs may occur, giving the "bamboo spine" appearance. Fractures typically occur in the thoracolumbar junction and are typically transverse, through the ossified disc.
